The Christianization of Cruelty and the Secularization of Compassion

I hope I’m wrong, but what appears to me to be happening is this: as cruelty moves into the most popular forms of American Christianity, compassion is moving out and taking up residence in a segment of the more secular, humanistic public. If we see Jesus-like compassion at all, its among ordinary not-particularly-religious people who are disturbed that this nation’s humanity is at risk by the lack of mercy shown to the weak and helpless.
