Blessings and Woes/Luke 6:17-26

Want to hear Jesus preaching? Here it is unfiltered:

Blessed are you who are poor,

for yours is the kingdom of God.

Blessed are you who are hungry now,

    for you will be filled.

Blessed are you who weep now,

    for you will laugh.

But woe to you who are rich,

for you have received your consolation.

Woe to you who are full now,

    for you will be hungry.

Woe to you who are laughing now,

for you will mourn and weep.

These powerful words are found in all three synoptic gospels; Matthew, Mark and Luke. It’s Jesus’ message of God’s Kingdom. God’s reign will upend the world order! It feels like a call for revolution, to transform the world into a more just, inclusive and equitable place. As a congregation we play a small part in what some call the Jesus movement. It’s not quite over yet as we have a long way to go and may not see the end in our lifetime, but we are committed. Along the way we hold each other and those around us who are near. There is real spiritual hunger and thirst in our community more than ever who long to belong to a place they can call home. You may or may not be surprised how important and critical a role we play in providing and nurturing spiritual needs in our community. The problem, or I should say the impediment, is we are hidden like a gem. No one knows we are around. As years have gone by; our children have grown up and moved on, people we love have passed away and other demographic changes, increasingly we become hidden.

It’s time to reach out and follow the way of Jesus as a public witness and shine the light of Christ with the message of hope and love! Let us worship together and meditate on the message of Jesus. Amen.
