Wake Up Call – Luke 12:32-40
The gospel reading is clear. Life is short. Stay awake. God is coming and every minute is filled with new possibilities. Our faith teaches us to stay awake to everything that life brings us, so that we don’t miss it when God comes. To be awake is to be alive in meaningful ways and to pay attention to how God is in our midst.
It’s been years since I had a major health checkup. I had four or five tubes of blood samples drawn and urine to tag along. I logged into the Texas Health app online and saw the results. I wish I could say I have a clean bill of health. I have high cholesterol, uric acid that caused gout not long ago and embarrassingly the list goes on with added high blood pressure. I am now taking a lisinopril tablet, and learning new medical terms. I must confess, I took my health for granted and neglected for years, assuming since I was never hospitalized, I’m fine. However, as many of you can relate, this is not how it works. In a blink of an eye, life passes by. It seems like yesterday when my boys were just a year old and now, they are all grown up and creating their path in life as young adults. I am no longer a youthful young man. My body has more mileage than what’s left before it gives up.
It’s a wakeup call. I need to pay attention to my health both physically and mentally. After my father died, there was part of that died with him. The grief can be crippling and you learn to live with it. It changes you. It can rewire your brain literally and how we experience life can be altered. Then you realize, you are not alone. We live in a faith community. It’s a blessing because there is care and love, to hold each other in prayer and to remember that God is with us. There is comfort and new possibilities open to us. It’s not the end. We are still here, alive. Let’s take each precious moment with gratitude, bless everyone with kindness and celebrate God’s love with our world that needs so much healing. Come this Sunday, we will give thanks and praise with the litany of God’s blessings. Thanks be to God!
