Persistent Widow – Luke 18:1-8
Since I’m in Korea and cannot join the No Kings protest with you, I want to remind you of the story of the persistent widow for this coming Sunday’s lectionary. It’s timely that this story falls on this important weekend to inspire us to persist in our public witness for justice against increasingly authoritarian government that is creating division, strife, corruption and suffering. I’m grateful nonetheless that there are growing pockets of resistance that are creating hope for a better future. When we show up and mobilize in protest demanding justice we stand with the widow who in the face of a corrupt judge wore him down to the point where justice was finally granted. The point of the story that Jesus makes is that God will grant justice to those who cry out to God; even an unjust judge who finally grants justice!
The story reminds us that we are not alone. God is not indifferent to human suffering. Our call is to cry out like the widow for a better world. There likely will be thousands gathered at the site where we participated last year. I hope more of us from the church will show up. Nationwide there will be millions Saturday to protest. In such times as we are living today we cannot be complicit to what is happening all around us. I will be with you in prayer and in spirit and look forward to hearing stories of protest when I return from my trip.
