The Gospel According to John – John 1:1-18
In the beginning, the gospel begins according to John. There is no nativity scene. Rather there is a cosmic shift that takes place, the universe, the source of all creation, the Creator becomes present among us. The word made flesh, and we have beheld the glory of God.
As I write, I can still hear the sound of the crowd that came to Cathy Baume’s memorial service. There is a reception. I greeted family and friends who shared stories and found comfort. The one they loved is no more, not in physical form of course, but in spirit very much present in lives of family and love they share and more. It’s the end of life but a beginning of eternal life. We are not alone but find comfort in each other’s presence. When I think of John’s message, God with us, is a message of comfort that we are not alone, even in the face of death. No matter what the circumstances, whether we feel the presence of God or absence of God, God is here in the thick of our messiness or in our happiness.
As we begin our new year, we carry with us this message from John. It’s a new beginning. God’s blessing, a new chapter in life. Let’s make the best of it and give God glory and praise. Let us worship God come our first Sunday of the year 2026. Thanks be to God!
