Self-healing Transformation – Luke 17:11-19
There are two streams of thoughts I’m wondering about as I think about our lectionary readings. One is about healing from shame, overwhelmed by guilt and regret in life to freedom. Second, how crippling our wounds can be to self worth and damage others in destructive ways. We have two stories of those who had leprosy, one is Naaman, a commander of the army, and the other is about the ten lepers Jesus healed. In the biblical world, this skin disease was considered God’s judgment and defined the person who had it “unclean.” They were ostracized and lived in shame!
The gospel, good news is that Jesus restores humanity, self-worth and liberation through his healing ministry. I want to reflect with you what that restored self worth looks like and how the gospel frees us from the weight of shame. And on a larger scale how our world politics are played out by those in power. On this note, I want to encourage you to join the No Kings protest on October 18th. I will not be here since I will be visiting my mom in Korea, but I will be in spirit and want to hear all about it when I return!
According to a recent executive order, Trump declared that Antifa (short for anti-fascist) are now lawfully considered “terrorists” that are trying to overthrow the government. Of course we are not trying to overthrow the government, but we are anti-fascist and yes anyone in power who acts like an authoritarian should be impeached and power curbed to serve the people.
Our journey as witnesses in the public square for justice will have a healing effect in our hearts and for the world. Thanks be to God! See you all this coming Sunday!
