You are the Salt and Light – Matthew 5:13-20
After preaching the beatitudes last week, on this Sunday as a follow up, Jesus told his disciples you are the salt and light of the world. He reminds us who we are, not just what we should do, called to follow his way to participate in creating God’s kin-dom, but that we carry within us the light of Christ, that our identity is deeply rooted in understanding that we have transformative power to be salt of the earth. Simply to say that our presence here matters, therefore behave and act like one; do justice, love kindness and grow a spine!
I can’t stop thinking about this gospel song I learned as a child that keeps me going, reminding me who I am, “This little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine! This little light of mine I’m gonna let it shine…this little light of mine I’m gonna let it shine. Let it shine, let it shine, let it shine!”
More than ever as a faith community we need to make our presence known in the face of growing cruelty and violence in our society. I am inspired by congregations actively supporting and creating resistance against ICE. I am inspired by conversations and people working hard to make a difference, creating hope and peace we need today.
Come Sunday on the Fifth Sunday after Epiphany, we will hear from the prophet Isaiah what God desires of us and how we can use our “superpower” to shine the light of Christ! It is our identity rooted in God’s love for the world as followers of Christ. Our liturgy, our confessions, our worship and our mission are all shaped by this single truth of God. Come let us worship God, hold space for one another, to heal, to support, to encourage and to empower one another and give God the praise and glory! Amen.
